Field of Screams

Field of Screams was terrifying, and blood curdling, and scream-worthy, and if you’re looking to spend $50 to scream your butt off, then this is definitely the place to go.

Four attractions are offered at the Lancaster, PA Field of Screams: The Den of Darkness, the Frightmare Asylum, the Haunted Hayride, and the Nocturnal Wasteland, which were all created by Jim and Gene Schopf, two former high school teachers.

“When we were younger we set up little haunted houses for the boy scouts and it was pretty cool. Then we did it for a few more years, and it just grew,” said Jim Schopf, co-owner of Field of Screams.

There is a live band that plays in the center of the venue which helps create the autumnal atmosphere. But don’t think you’re safe when you’re jamming out to the band; the costumed actors can walk around and scare you when you’re least expecting it.

I suggest going with a group of three or more so that you can all walk in a line and hide behind each other, and designate who is going to enter first, because our group had some trouble with this. [Halfway through the wasteland, which resulted in a fight that took long enough for the creepy actors to come find us and make us move.]

If you don’t like being touched, do not come to Field of Screams. Actors can touch you with their hands, chainsaws (with the chain removed), and other fake weapons. At one point, I was approached by a clown pet my hair and whispered, “Hey sweetie,” in my ear.

I almost feel like I was bullied during some attractions. I received many comments regarding my height which were then followed by death threats, so don’t look for political correctness from the actors. If you look scared or the least bit vulnerable then you will be targeted, which I learned the hard way. Field of Screams is definitely not a place to go for a date night; it makes everyone there look like a wimp.

Overall, Field of Screams delivered, I was horrified and strained my voice from screaming. If you’re looking for a scare, Field of Screams is the place to be.
