Why no one cares about your political views

Why no one cares about your political views

Maggie Parks, Reporter

Instagram is a place where anyone can post almost anything. For the most part, Instagram is used to share pictures of people and their friends. I love seeing these types of photos. Maybe we’re a technology obsessed generation but there’s something soothing about sitting in my bed, scrolling through social media after a long day of school. It’s nice to have a connection with everyone you know through one app and be able to keep up with the best parts of their life. Although some people say it encourages unhealthy “perfectionism,” I enjoy seeing my friends and classmates happy. This is what Instagram was designed for. It’s a platform that promotes unity and positivity. It’s not a platform to start drama over politics. I understand that you think you’re “fighting for what you believe in,” but in reality you’re looking for an argument. No matter what your stance is, bickering with your classmates through Instagram comments is not the way to get your message across. If you truly care about a topic then show your support don’t tell your 1,000 followers. It’s good to be passionate about something but if you shove your passion down other people’s throats they aren’t going to listen, actually they might dislike you and your ideas even more. Maybe it would make more sense if we could vote but most of us aren’t even 18 yet, let alone politically savvy. Odds are you’re regurgitating what your parents say to the TV screen every night while watching CNN. Even if I agree with what you say, I don’t agree with the way you present yourself if you use social media to feud with other people. It’s childish, which goes to show that your views aren’t valid at all. The people who comment might be even worse. They could ignore the post like the rest of us but instead they have to argue their own point to get attention. It ends up in a spiral of disagreement that only generates a bigger disparity between the two parties and between the people in our school. Although I don’t agree with a lot of people’s political views, I recognize that the majority of these people are primarily influenced by their parents, and there’s nothing that they could’ve done to help that. By automatically assuming that everyone with different beliefs than you is a bad person, you are excluding yourself from people you may actually get along with. There are some core values that everyone has, and that’s a great thing, but most of the fights on Instagram are so party-oriented that it seems like a personal attack. So keep your opinion to yourself, and spare the rest of the innocent bystanders.
